Categories of Trains
All railway passenger transportation in Russia is divided by communication type: long-distance, local, suburban. At the long-distance communication, transportation is carried out within two or more railways; at the local – within one railway, and suburban – within 150 km.
Trains are also divided into categories depending on their speed and comfort level
Train categories:
- Express (No from 001 to 156), high-speed (No from 157 to 170), passenger (No from 171 to 699).
- High-speed trains are the fastest and they run between large cities located not far from each other. Such trains are not planned for long journeys and therefore equipped mainly with carriages with seats. They run during daylight hours (Avrora, ER-200, Nevski express).
- Express and passenger trains are mainly long-distance trains and they have different categories of carriages. Express trains move faster and make less stops than passenger ones, therefore the duration of a journey is much shorter. Besides, usually they are equipped with newer and more comfortable carriages and a dining car. Often, express trains are of high-class or have high-class carriages. Passenger trains are intended for both passengers traveling to the final destination and to small settlements along the way where express trains do not stop.
