Classes
The 1st class:
On most routes the 1st class implies accommodation of passengers in 2-berth sleeping cabins (Ë) because it ensures maximum privacy, more space and, consequently, no strangers in the private space of each other.
However, in daytime trains (Moscow - St. Petersburg, Moscow - Yaroslavl, Moscow - Tula, Moscow - Orel, Moscow - Vladimir, etc.) the 1st class (business class) assumes accommodation of passengers in high-comfort carriages with seats. Such trains are used widely now and have various options of equipment and assemblage. They are different in terms of the space between seats, availability of tables, TV sets, and snack-bars. Often, the cost of the 1st class ticket includes hot meals from the dining carriage (a-la-carte), tea, coffee, newspapers and magazines, soft drinks.
The 2nd class:
In most long-distance trains assumes accommodation in sleeping compartments (3-4-berth cabins - Ê). The 2nd class of sitting carriages differs from the 1st one with accommodation of more passengers and therefore lower price of the ticket. However, TV sets, folding tables and extra services may also be available.
The 3rd class:
In long-distance trains which assume overnight travels, the 3rd class means carriages with sleeping banks (Ï). Common sitting carriages (O) are also used if duration of the trip does not exceed 24 hours. Berth accommodation and relatively low price is one of the advantages, so this is the most popular option of passenger transportation in Russia. The 3rd class supposes no meals included or TV.
Passengers of all classes can use a dining car service, if such is available in the train. Smoking inside the carriages of all trains of the Russian Railway is prohibited. |
